How to get a song signed by a record label

As a producer or writer, a common goal when you first start making music is to be featured and signed by a record label. To join the ranks of artists who have had the status, success and streams that the labels cans provide. Here's a few tips to get your next song signed.

GOOD MUSIC

This is the baseline. If your music isn't up to scratch with the labels current standard I'd highly recommend to keep progressing your music journey without submitting (just yet) to your goal label. Reach out to the numerous communities that are structured and supported by growing producers. If you're looking for feedback, try the Soundle discord - https://discord.gg/QhfSvaWu6Y

This way you can get feedback quickly and without making any impression on a label A&R. Another thing to keep in mind is if your music fits the current vibe the label is releasing. Make sure you're being smart with submissions!

Demo Submission

Ok buckle up, you're taking the plunge to email the label - whats the best way to do this?

Mostly labels use a submission link via their website, but sometimes it gets tricky. Label radar is good but slow and has somewhat of a negative reputation for success on demo signs.

If you're lucky enough to have access to an active A&R email, this is 100% the best bet to getting your music heard. Hold your nerve as It can take up to 2 weeks for a response, these guys are super busy and have a TON of demos to listen through to.

Emailing

Be short, concise and polite. These guys do not want your life story and definitely don't want to be scrolling to find a Soundcloud link. I'd recommend using an EPK (Electronic Press Kit) attached to the email to deliver any artistry visually, usually this will be looked at after your music has amazed them. Here's an example email -

To: (Label Demo Submission) or (A&R Email)

Subject: (Artist Name) Demo Submission

Hi "(A&R Name)" or "(Label) Team",

My name is (Name) and I'm a producer under the alias (Artist Name). I've made a song that I think would be a great fit as a (Label) release. Please find the link to my music and attached EPK below.

(Song Link)

Thank you for taking the time to listen, any feedback that could be shared would be massively appreciated as (Label) is my dream sign and I'm happy to make any changes under your recommendation.

All the best,

(Your Name) / (Artist Name)

TLDR: Have good music, get feedback from other producers first and make sure your emailing is professional (feel free to steal the template above). Taking these tips onboard is a surefire way to increase your chances of being a demo submission success story!

Who's your dream label?
